My Loves, My Hopes, My Joys is a fantastical puppet performance about expressing and understanding the queer identity through the lens of a little fairy in a grand magical garden. It focuses on the powerful impact that a supportive community can have on someone who is on their journey to exist in this world as unapologetically authentic as possible. Even a fairy needs someone to teach them how to fly.
Each of the flower puppets represent a different aspect of the queer identity. (In order of appearance)
Bleeding Heart/Zinnia represents the love and support that comes with community. They serve as a gateway into self exploration by allowing Chicory to meet and reckon with the other aspects of queerness. Bleeding Heart/Zinnia is there for Chicory at their highest and lowest, offering support no matter the circumstances.
Lily/Daffodil represents the expression of one’s identity. It is bright, flamboyant, and inviting, just as the stereotypical Queer person is expected to be. It helps Chicory by showing off what it means to perform queerness and how it looks to be comfortable in doing so.
Crocus/Iris represents the self-understanding and acceptance of one’s identity. In contrast to Lily/Daffodil, it is dark, intricate, and intimidating. The folds and nooks that are created by its petals show the depth of what it means to understand oneself. Though it may be viewed as menacing, Crocus/Iris holds the key to being completely and wholly authentic.
